Proposal Accepted: "The Empty Book Bag: Digital Instruction Using the iPad & Related Technologies"

My proposal has been accepted for Indiana Wesleyan University's No Educator Left Behind Conference on June 18 in Greenwood, Indiana. I will give a 50 minute presentation titled "The Empty Book Bag: Digital Instruction Using the iPad and Related Technologies." Here is the description/Abstract I submitted to the review committee (I was limited to 75 words—a difficult task for me on any day):

2010 may be the year that we begin the transition to digital content as a mainstream practice. This session demonstrates how the IWU facilitator can "leave the book bag at home" and use one tablet device for course guides, lesson plans, textbooks and even presentations on a projector. Is a textbook not available in digital form? This session will show you how to convert a book from its physical format to digital for use on any platform.

I also offered this explanation in the proposal as well:

Much has been written about the iPad as a media consumption device, but many are discovering that it's quite capable for creating content as well. And while tablet computers seem ideal for students as a digital textbook medium, not much has yet been discussed in regard to how instructors can use these devices both in and out of the classroom. This session focuses primarily on the use of tablet computers as convenient tools for classroom instruction. After having often been loaded down with materials in multiple bags when walking into the classroom myself, a tablet computer allows the facilitator the freeing ability to “travel light.”

Are you going to publish an article at This Lamp for those of us not being able to attend your presentation? (please...)

It's not going to be a straight article. I will have Keynote slides, but there will also be an element of live demonstration. Maybe I can post relevant Keynote slides, or maybe we can video record the presentation.

Congratulations, Rick. Be sure to tell us how it goes.

Congrats and sounds awesome. Lead the way. Even in the pulpit I have seen several pastors using a iPad to preach. I like being able to control my own slides and not have to wait on someone to change it since I do not use a manuscript. Using and iPod touch or iPhone is just too small to read if you walk away from the pulpit

I've also wondered what it would be like to use the iPad for preaching instead of a printed manuscript (for those who, unlike yourself, use a manuscript). I would think that there would be an advantage to not having to turn pages, but simply occasionally moving the page upward with a finger.

I had inadvertently typed April 18 for the date of the conference, but it is June 18, and is now corrected in the post.

Rick, I hope there is a recorded version of your talk, my wife just accepted a new position with the school district which in large part will be training teachers how to integrate technology (smartboards, laptops, presentations) into the classroom. I'm sure she would enjoy what you have to say.

Does the technology distract in the preaching. I have used Keynote for preaching, but stopped because of time demands and I felt as if I was spending all my time creating a great presentation to prop up an OK sermon. I decided to focus on creating what hopefully is a great sermon and leave the pictures to the folks imagination.

I do agrre with Mr. jerry its not the presentation that counts,it is the content and how you deliver it to your audience.Maybe a quite sometimes its nice to have them to capture your audience attention. But moreover it is on how well you delliver or explain it.What ever technologies is it..the great power you within you is the man power that god has given you..Am i preaching here!!!lol..just commenting..

Can you tell me if and when you will release your slides? I am very interested.

It was only partly slides, and then I transitioned over to live demonstration. I've got video of the whole presentation, but I've never taken the time to upload it. Maybe I will one day.
